Three ways to manage your NDIS plan

When you’re approved for the NDIS, you’ll be asked how you want your funding managed. There are three options, and understanding the differences is the key to getting the most out of your plan.

Plan-managed
A plan manager handles the financial administration of your NDIS plan, such as paying invoices, budget tracking, and ensuring all supports are claimed accurately and within NDIS guidelines, while you keep full choice and control over your supports. Plan Management is fully funded by the NDIS, so it’s at no cost to you and does not impact any of your other support budgets.

Self-managed
You manage everything yourself, from choosing providers, paying invoices, to keeping records. You get maximum freedom, including the ability to pay above the NDIS price guide, but all the administrative burden and responsibility sits with you.

NDIA-managed (agency-managed)
The NDIA pays your providers directly. Simple and hands-off, but you can only use registered providers.  This means you have less flexibility and control over how your funds are spent.

What does it all mean?

Here’s a plain-English breakdown of every feature in the comparison above, so you know exactly what you’re choosing.

Step 1

Not every great support worker or therapist is registered with the NDIS. When your plan is agency-managed or self-managed, you have the freedom to choose from a much wider selection of providers, including sole traders, smaller organisations, and community-based supports that aren’t on the NDIS register. NDIA-managed participants can only access registered providers, which significantly limits your service provider options.

Step 2

This is the core job of a plan manager; handling all the financial aspects of your NDIS plan. That means receiving invoices from your providers, checking they’re correct and within NDIS guidelines, submitting claims to the NDIA, and making sure your providers are paid on time. Feature 3

The NDIS Price Guide sets maximum rates that can be claimed for different supports. It’s updated regularly and can be complex to navigate. Our team knows it inside out. Running low on funds in a support category can be stressful, especially if it catches you off guard. Our system sends you alerts when your budget is approaching its limit, giving you time to review your spending, speak with your support coordinator, or plan ahead for your next plan review. It’s a simple feature that makes a real difference to how smoothly your plan runs.

Everyday consumables like continence aids, wound dressings, or low-cost assistive products can be claimed through your NDIS plan, but the process isn’t always straightforward. Our team supports you with placing and processing consumable orders correctly, making sure the right support category is used and your claim is lodged accurately. No guesswork required.

Assistive technology (AT) from wheelchairs and communication devices to specialised software is one of the more complex areas of NDIS funding. Our team understands the AT approval process, quote requirements, and what’s covered under different support categories. Section 33 of the NDIS Act allows participants to use a Statement of Participant Supports (SoPS), giving greater flexibility in how funding is allocated and used across a plan period. This feature is not available to self-managed participants.

This is the one feature that self-management has and plan management doesn’t. When you self-manage, you can pay providers more than the NDIS Price Guide allows. Sometimes it is useful if a preferred provider charges above the set rate. With plan management, all payments must stay within NDIS price limits. For most people, the price guide rates are more than sufficient, but it’s worth knowing if you have specific providers in mind.
