What is NDIS plan management?
How does plan management support you and your goals?
A plan manager takes care of the admin so you can focus on your goals, while still giving you the freedom to use both registered and unregistered providers. It’s a flexible, low-stress way to manage your NDIS funding. Not surprisingly, plan management is also the most popular option for NDIS participants across Australia.
When you join the NDIS, you will be asked how you want your funding to be managed. It is important to understand how plan-managed compares to other options such as self-managed and NDIA-managed (also known as agency-managed). Understanding these choices will help you make the best decision for you to get most of your NDIS plan.
Understanding Plan Management
See how each management option supports your needs
Once you have completed your NDIS access application and your NDIS eligibility is confirmed, you’ll have a planning meeting. At this meeting you can specify how you’d like your plan to be managed.
We’ve put together a simple comparison table of the 3 ways an NDIS plan can be managed: self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed (also known as agency-managed). The table highlights what each option can and can’t cover, to help you choose the option that best supports your goals, flexibility, and day-to-day needs.

Comparing plan types
Self-managed vs NDIA-managed vs
plan-managed
We know it can be tough figuring out which management style suits you best. Here’s an easy comparison to help you decide.
Self-managed NDIS plans
Self-management gives you the highest level of freedom and control. You choose your own providers, set your own schedules, and handle payments and records yourself. It’s great for people who want maximum flexibility and are confident in managing their own admin.
Pros
Self-management gives you total freedom to choose any provider and full control over your funding. It suits people who want independence and feel confident managing money.
Cons
The downside is the admin. You handle all payments, records and reporting, which can be time-consuming if you’d prefer extra support.
Choosing a self-managed NDIS plan means you take full responsibility for managing your funding. You handle everything from choosing providers to paying invoices and keeping records.
This option gives you full control and independence and helps you build skills in managing your own finances. It is the only option that allows you to pay higher than the NDIS price guide. However, it also requires a lot more time and effort, as you’ll need to take care of all financial record keeping and reporting to the NDIA.
Self-management is ideal if you want complete freedom and if you are comfortable managing your own administrative and financial responsibilities. it may feel challenging for people who prefer not to manage detailed admin tasks or aren’t confident in handling financial record keeping. In a nutshell, you have to weigh up the extra flexibility you get with the time and responsibility you have to take on when self-managing.
NDIA-managed (agency-managed) NDIS plans
NDIA-managed (agency-managed) plans are the simplest option, with the NDIA paying providers directly. It offers peace of mind but also the least flexibility, as you can only use registered providers.
Pros
NDIA-managed plans are the simplest option. The NDIA pays providers directly, so there’s almost no admin and everything runs automatically.
Cons
But you’re limited to registered providers, and you can’t approve payments, which means less flexibility and control over your supports.
NDIA-managed, also known as agency-managed, is simple and secure, making it ideal for people who prefer to use a handful of regular and registered providers they trust.
It is also the most restrictive of the options, allowing you to only select registered providers. It also offers the least choice and control, as providers claim and get paid from your plan directly without you needing to approve the payments.
Plan-managed NDIS plans
Plan management gives you flexibility and support. You choose your providers — registered or unregistered — while a plan manager handles payments, budgeting and compliance. It’s the ideal balance of control and convenience.
Pros
Plan management gives you flexibility without the admin. You can use registered and unregistered providers, while your plan manager handles payments, records and budgeting at no extra cost.
Cons
The trade off with plan management is that you do not submit claims yourself and payments must remain within NDIS pricing rules.
A plan-managed approach gives you the best of both worlds, all the flexibility of self-managed without having to commit to the time and responsibility of record keeping and compliance. At All Plan Management we take care of paying your providers fast, tracking your NDIS budget, and ensuring your funds are spent within the guidelines, while you still make all the important decisions about your support.
With plan management, you can:
– access the full NDIS marketplace (registered and unregistered providers)
– leave the paperwork to us
– call us anytime for plan spending and budget advice

When you choose the plan management option, the NDIS allocates extra funding to pay the plan manager. Plan management means you get support to manage your funding, with no extra out-of-pocket expense.
With All Plan Management the best part is you keep full choice and control over how your funds are used, while benefiting from a dedicated team of specialists who respond quickly to help you achieve your goals.
